THE THREE SYSTEMS
STANDING SEAM
Panels joined by raised vertical seams with the fasteners hidden underneath. Clips let the panels expand and contract through Texas heat. See standing seam metal roof in Austin.
GALVALUME
Steel coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy, left unpainted for that bright silver Hill Country look. Available as standing seam or exposed fastener. See Galvalume metal roofing in Austin.
EXPOSED FASTENER
Ribbed or corrugated panels screwed through the face. The lowest-cost metal roof, common on shops, barns and outbuildings. See exposed fastener metal roofing in Austin.
HOW THEY COMPARE
| Standing seam | Galvalume | Exposed fastener | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relative cost | Highest | Below painted finishes | Lowest |
| Fasteners | Hidden under the seams | Either, depending on panel | Through the panel face |
| Maintenance | Least | Low | Periodic screw and washer checks |
| Look | Clean, modern lines | Bright silver Texas classic | Ribbed, agricultural |
| Best for | Homes you plan to keep | Reflectivity without paint | Shops, barns, outbuildings |
FINISHES AND GAUGES
Painted panels come in two main finish families: PVDF (often sold as Kynar 500), which holds color longest, and SMP, which costs less and fades sooner. Panel thickness is measured in gauge, where a lower number means thicker steel. Your estimate lists the finish and gauge for every panel so you can compare bids honestly.
METAL ROOF SYSTEM QUESTIONS
WHAT'S THE MOST POPULAR METAL ROOF IN AUSTIN?
Standing seam is the most common choice on homes. Galvalume, both standing seam and exposed fastener, is everywhere across the Hill Country and on rural properties.
DO METAL ROOFS HOLD UP TO HAIL?
It depends on the panel, gauge and finish. Some metal roofing products carry Class 4 impact ratings. Our metal roofs and hail guide explains what the ratings mean and how insurers treat them.
CAN METAL GO OVER MY EXISTING SHINGLES?
Sometimes, but we usually recommend a tear-off so the deck can be checked and repaired first. See metal roof replacement.
